The Arapahoe Park and Recreation District is developing a new one-acre park adjacent to Antelope Ridge Elementary School within the Saddle Rock Ridge community. The park, to be called Ridge Park, will be a model for water-wise design and plantings. Since the elementary school provides joint use ballfields for local residents and the site is not conducive to field activities, the Board of Directors has decided a new approach to park design was in order. Due to water shortages, more and more landscapes are being developed utilizing plantings demanding little water while limiting the need for vast amounts of bluegrass. The park will incorporate the following features:
- Playground targeting pre-school age children, designed with neighborhood input
- Park shelter with stone columns, picnic tables and trash receptacles
- Pedestrian bridge over drainage swale
- All plantings are water-wise with year around interest. Evergreen trees are in the background offering privacy to the neighboring homes. Large deciduous trees are selected for their drought tolerance and durability. Ornamental trees will offer color and flowering blooms. Various shrubs, ornamental grasses and perennials are used in informal groupings; offering color, varied bloom periods and year around interest.
- Sidewalks and paths allow access to the school and will allow neighboring homeowners to view the beautiful display of plantings and gain some knowledge of water-wise landscaping.
Construction began on this project during the 2002/03 winter and the anticipated completion date is May of 2003.
